We’ve been busy lately packing for our move next month. With three kids and moving right after Ramadan, I need to get things going as early as possible. This past weekend, we packed away all the dishes. We only kept the bare minimum that we need for our family of five. This should force us to keep up with cleaning before the stacks of dirty dishes take over. We have so few dishes now that we can’t fill a single dishwasher load!
Which reminds me… I have a surprise to reveal about our house. It has (gasp!) no dishwasher. I haven’t told many people about this because I know I’ll get a ton of criticism and people saying that it will be too hard for us. It won’t be, inshaAllah. Our plan is that we’ll only keep this many dishes out (everything we’ve packed will go straight into storage), and we’ll be forced to get into the habit of hand washing. We can always pull out more dishes from storage when we have company.
I’m back! And we’re moving! Please check my about page; I’ve updated it to reflect our growing family.
Back to moving: if you know us in person, you know that this isn’t news. As renters in the GTA, it feels like we’re constantly moving from one home to the next. Unfortunately, the stability of a “forever home” is one thing we crave but are not likely to achieve any time soon, if ever.
But this move is a bit different. In the last year or so, I’ve been a lot more mindful and introspective about who I am and what I want in life. Stress has been an issue in our family for quite a while and we all need to do some unwinding, kids included.
A few people have asked me to write a post about a typical day in our life. What our routine is like, how we manage our household chores and still give the kids some new experiences, and so on. So I actually started out the day today planning to document a typical routine. It didn’t quite work out that way, but i have realised that there really is no such thing as a typical day. Every day is an adventure if you let yourself really experience it and see where it takes you.
It’s been a long time since my last post and we’ve been busy! Here are some quick updates so you know what’s going on:
Yes, we’ve left our cramped condo behind and moved into a townhouse. We are still drowning in boxes and haven’t finished decorating in the least, but we have space! And we’ve been going outdoors a lot more often, which has been so good for all of us and our moods. Speaking of nature…
You might have noticed that I’ve been on hiatus for a while. I didn’t plan for that — it just happened — but I think I’m better for it.
After my last post, I had a dozen ideas floating around as to what I might write next, but one by one I crossed them out. I had a post planned about my breastfeeding journey, but decided it was too personal and that I’m not ready to write that story just yet. I had another post planned about my opinion on telling children to stand up for themselves when confronted with bully behaviour, but decided the idea needed more thought before I could write a decent piece on it. I thought about writing something on the morning walks that Pippin and I have started taking together, but when I sat down to write, nothing came out.
And thus entered the dreaded writer’s block. (Don’t worry, this is not a post about writer’s block.)
